You have just seen what is in the way. This is the room where it moves.
A personal invitation
Before you decide
anything.
Forty seconds from me, on why this room exists and what it asks of you. Sound on if you can — and if you would rather read, everything in it is written further down this page.
Step into
the journey.
Who is holding it with me
Three of us, live,
for two and a half hours.
-
ARME
Sound & the journey
Aryan Mewara. The music, the arc of the evening, and the room itself — mixed live, never a playlist.
-
Ashwin Xavier
Live percussion
Drums played into the mix as it happens, so the rhythm you move to is being made in the room rather than pressed on a record.
-
VJ Harish
Visual alchemy
A visual storyteller and 3D projection mapper. The walls stop being walls about twenty minutes in.
Founding Circle
The first ten places of ALTER 001. After them ₹2,500, then ₹3,000.
What actually happens to you
From the life you are holding
to the one you came for.
-
The problem
Your brain never gets a night off.
Work, the phone, and the version of you other people expect — all day, every day. Even rest is performed now: scrolled, photographed, reviewed. There is almost nowhere left where nobody is watching, including you.
-
Why it matters now
The body keeps what the mind won’t say.
What does not get expressed does not disappear. It settles into the shoulders, the jaw, the sleep. Most people never notice how much they are carrying until the moment it goes — and nothing in an ordinary week gives it a way out.
-
The journey
Two and a half hours, in three movements.
-
Arriving
You come as you are. Shoes off, phone away, no introductions to perform. The body is still braced, and that does not last.
-
Purification
The day comes off. Shaking, breath, rhythm. The self-consciousness goes — not because you decide to drop it, but because the body gets busy and the mind loses its grip on the wheel.
-
Transformation
Something moves that you did not choose. The music goes where it goes and you follow. Most people meet a version of themselves here they have not seen since they were a child.
-
Celebration
Joy, and then quiet. The room ends together, lights low. You leave lighter than you came in, and it holds for days.
-
Arriving
-
What you walk out with
Lighter. Quieter. Yours again.
- A quiet head — the first real break your brain has had in months.
- A body that feels like yours, rather than something you manage.
- Something released that you did not know you were still carrying.
- A room that saw you as you are, and did not judge a single thing.
- A night you still feel on Wednesday.
-
Worth knowing
Six things, before you come.
Safety is built before anything else.
Fifty people, and ten agreements everybody reads before arriving: no talking, no photographs, no intoxicants, nobody picking anybody up. Nobody asks you to touch, pair up, or say a word.
You do not need to know how to dance.
There are no steps and nothing to get right. Swaying counts; so does lying on the floor. The people who say they cannot dance usually travel furthest.
The body is slower than the mind.
Most people feel little in the first half hour and a great deal in the second. Come without needing it to work, and it usually does.
Whatever comes up was already in there.
Tears, laughter, shaking — all normal, and all welcome. Nobody crowds you or tries to fix it, and you can step aside whenever you need to.
Nothing alters you here but the music.
No alcohol, no substances. That is exactly why what happens in this room does not happen in a club.
It is small, and it changes a year.
One realisation, one release, one celebration. Written down it looks small. Lived, it is what shifts the direction of a year.
So what is
actually stopping you?
It is a Sunday evening. It costs less than dinner for two. The only thing being asked of you is that you turn up and stop performing for two and a half hours.
You can close this page
Keep working it out on your own, the way you have been. Nothing bad happens. It is a Sunday like any other, and next October looks a lot like this one.
Or you can come and find out
One evening. One realisation, one release, one celebration — which is usually all it has ever taken to change the direction of a year. There is nothing to lose in a room where nobody is watching, and everything is on the other side of it.

The room
We dance at Sabha.
A hundred and sixty year old Tamil school on Kamaraj Road, restored rather than rebuilt. Arched doors, an open timber roof, and a courtyard with one of Karnataka’s oldest working wells. The hall is ours for the evening, with the doors closed on the city.

How we hold the room
The agreements.
Ten lines that make the room safe enough to be free in.
- Arrive before the gate closes at 5.00pm. We move as one room, from the first breath to the last.
- No talking on the floor. Talk before, talk after, and let the dance be wordless.
- This is not a place to pick anyone up. Respect everyone, especially women. No means no.
And seven more, all of them practical
- Nothing to alter you but the music. No alcohol, no drugs, no intoxicants of any kind.
- Phones silent and out of sight. No photographs, no video.
- Move however you want. There are no steps and no right way.
- No spectating. Stay with your own body rather than watching anyone else’s.
- Dance alone, or with anyone who invites you.
- To decline an invitation: hands at your heart, a small bow. That is a complete answer.
- Come with clean bare feet. Water is here. Wear something you can move in.
Anyone who cannot hold these will be asked to leave.
Before you book
The practical bits.
Everything else is answered above. This is the getting-there.
What do I wear? What should I bring?
Something comfortable you can move in. We dance barefoot. Water is there, so bring nothing else.
What if I’m late?
Doors open at 4.30pm. The gate closes at 5.00pm and does not reopen: the room has to be whole to be safe. Plan for Bengaluru traffic.
Can I get a refund, or give my place to someone else?
Cancel more than a week before and we refund you in full. After that there is no refund, but your place can go to someone else, or move to a future ALTER evening. Inside the last 24 hours a place cannot be moved or refunded. To transfer, message us on WhatsApp.
